What Is Atrial Fibrillation
A cardiothoracic surgeon with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Mohammad Salim Ratnani is an official supervisor of the cardiac surgery specialty program at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. A resident of Charleston, West Virginia, Dr. Muhammad Salim Ratnani ran a solo practice where he treated patients with various conditions including atrial fibrillation.
Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is a common type of heart arrhythmia where the heart beats irregularly. It occurs when the heart’s two atria (its upper chambers) beat too fast or chaotically, out of coordination with its two lower ventricles. This increases a person’s risk of developing blood clots within the heart, spreading to other parts of the body, causing ischemia (blocked blood flow). In severe cases, these clots can even cause a stroke.
Possible causes of Afib include coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, lung disease, hyperthyroidism, and heart defects. Factors that raise a person’s risk of developing Afib include advanced age, obesity, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and smoking.
While it is impossible to guarantee that a person will not develop the condition completely, certain habits can reduce a person’s risk of developing Afib. These include eating a heart-healthy diet, quitting smoking, becoming physically active, reducing stress, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine. If a person already has Afib, they can manage the condition through medication prescribed by a doctor.
